Dog Bite Law - Six Things to Do After Your Dog Bites Someone

The newspaper has a story today about a 60-year-old Southern California man who was mauled to death by two pit bulls. Seems the man was standing in his own back yard having a cigarette when the attack occurred. These dogs belonged to his grandson, and the victim was familiar with the dogs. Neither dog had been neutered.

Bits Tools

Those dogs could have been radical non-smokers, Doubt it, though. But this is certainly a story of a family tragedy. But, if you have one or more dogs at your home, you could have a tragedy waiting to happen.

Bits Tools

Pit Bulls and Rottweilers are the two most fatal attackers. Next are the Akita and Chow. Dogs that are tied up are very dangerous, and male un-neutered dogs are the most dangerous.

Dog bite law is an unusual area of the law, and can affect you and your home or business quite negatively if you own a dog. How?

Depending upon your circumstances, you could be subject to both civil and criminal charges if your dog bites someone. Compare that to having the postman slip and fall on your sidewalk, which could only involve simple negligence on your part.

The law consists of both civil and criminal law, and varies widely between state and local jurisdictions. The reason it varies is the interpretation of the old "One-Bite Rule." That rule, with its basis in English common law, protects a dog owner until he gains knowledge that his dog is vicious or dangerous. Once the owner learns this, he becomes strictly liable for injuries the dog causes.

Most all states hold the dog owner liable if injuries are caused by negligent handling, or violating a leash law. In almost two-thirds of the states, the owner is statutorily liable, meaning he is liable simply because he owns the dog.

Here are six tips on what to do after your dog bites someone:

1. Stay calm and be nice to the victim. Don't argue about who is at fault. Don't accuse the victim of anything. Remember that this person is going to make a decision now about whether to hire a lawyer to sue you.

2. Take the victim to a doctor or hospital and get medical attention. Pay for it yourself, no matter whether you have insurance or not.

3. Take precautions to protect other people from your dog.

4. Secure the name, address and phone number of ALL witnesses to the incident.

5. Do not make ANY statements to ANYONE but your own attorney about the incident.

6. Call your homeowners, renters or business insurance company and immediately report the incident. If the victim decides to pursue a damage claim against you, the insurance company will likely have to provide legal counsel and defend you in the lawsuit. If you do not report the incident right away, they might deny your claim for late reporting.

When you're shopping for new insurance, most insurance companies will ask you the breed of the dog you own. Most insurers will either charge you higher rates for certain breeds, or refuse to insure you at all.

If you're interested in reading more about dog bite law, go to the website of Attorney Kenneth Phillips at: http://www.dogbitelaw.com

Kenneth Phillips is the nation's leading authority on dog bite law. His Beverly Hills, California law practice is unique in that he only represents dog bite victims. Mr. Phillips has done hundreds of radio and TV interviews, and featured in scores of print articles over the years. He represents clients all over the United States.

If you have experienced a property loss, whether fire, wind, flood or other, you need to know winning insurance claim strategies. The insurance company will not tell you the claims process, but I will. I will show you how to take control of your insurance claim, and add hundreds or even thousands more dollars to your claim settlement. For more information, go to the website listed below.

Denali 115-Piece Home Repair Tool Kit Feature

  • Broad assortment of hand tools and accessories makes this a great general purpose kit for the home or shop
  • Quality hand tools with professional features meeting ANSI standards
  • Bit sets allow for drilling into metal, wood and concrete
  • Packed in large durable nylon bag for easy and flexible storage
  • Perfect for the home, shop, apartment, condo or RV

Denali 115-Piece Home Repair Tool Kit Overview

Every home needs a good set of basic tools, and kits are a great way to get them at a considerable savings. Three things make Denali’s 115-piece kit stand out—the price, an exceptional selection of screwdriver bits, and last but not least, the bag. In fact, it’s hard to find a set of tools as extensive as this for anywhere near this price. If purchased separately, these items would cost 0.00

This kit includes all of the tools you need for just about any household chore, from hanging pictures to fixing a leaky faucet. They are of good quality and should handle all of your household chores and repairs for many years to come. Going through this kit, I really appreciated little touches rarely seen in basic tool sets, like the soft-grip rubber cover on the tape measure that makes it easy and comfortable to hold, and the dizzying array of bits that come with the ratcheting screwdriver handle.

But what’s really brilliant is that all of these tools come in a heavy-duty nylon bag. Most tool sets come in big, flat blow-molded cases that can be awkward to store and carry. Plus, some tools invariably fall out when you open the case. That’s why most professionals, after buying a tool set, will throw away the case it came in and go out and buy a separate tool bag or chest to store their tools. The Denali kit’s bag fits easily under a sink cabinet (it actually is the size of a breadbox), and has both a shoulder strap and hand-straps that Velcro together, making it easy to carry around. The mouth of the bag has metal stabilizing rods in the zipper, so it opens wide and stays open, meaning you can set it down, and easily get to any of the tools inside while you are working. There are a ton of pockets lining the inside and outside of the bag to carry little things like nails, screws, tape, picture hangers—all of the little things that seem to crowd your kitchen drawers.

Of course, what are most important are the tools themselves. Again, this is a well-appointed set of quality tools that should outfit you for just about any household need. Here is a complete tally:

What’s In The Bag

Hammer
This 16-ounce ripping hammer with heavy duty fiberglass handle is a medium-weight hammer that will handle most household jobs, with claws for pulling nails.

Torpedo level
A good sturdy level is a must for hanging or straightening pictures, checking tabletop alignment, or mounting towel bars and curtain rods. This 9-inch, aluminum model is accurate, lightweight and easy to handle.

Tape measure
The 3/4-inch wide by 16-foot long tape measure has a thumb lock, metric and English markings, marks for placing studs every 16-inches, a belt clip, and a soft-grip rubber shell that makes it easy to grip and comfortable to hold.

Heavy-duty zinc utility knife with rubber grip

Wrenches

  • 16-piece hex key set
These are also called Allen wrenches. The kit comes with 8 in metric and 8 in English measurements.
  • 6-piece combination wrench set with steel clip
Pliers
  • 8-inch needle- nose pliers with wire-cutting blades, useful for getting into small spaces and gripping small nails, screws, nuts, etc. (meets or exceeds ANSI standards)
  • 8-inch diagonal pliers (meets or exceeds ANSI standards)
  • 8-inch groove-joint pliers(meets or exceeds ANSI standards)
  • 7-inch nickel-coated locking pliers are essential for getting a good, solid grip, especially when working in small spaces that don’t allow you to grip with your full strength.
  • wire cutters
Screwdrivers
Wow, you’d never imagine needing a star-drive screwdriver, until you buy that fancy new European dishwasher. Denali’s kit includes a ratcheting handle with a selection of interchangeable bits to provide an exceptional array of screwdrivers in all sizes and head shapes. The ratcheting handle is a nice feature, making it a lot easier to drive screws that are upside down or in tough to see places, where you really don’t want release pressure on the screwdriver handle to keep turning it.
  • 14 flat head: 4, 5, 6, and 7 mm and 3/32-, 1/8-, 5/32-, 3/16- (x3), 7/32-, and 1/4- (x3) inch
  • 9 Phillips head: 1x2, 2x5, and 3x2
  • 3 square head: S1, S2, and S3
  • 10 star head: T6, T7, T8, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, and T40
  • 10 hex: 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 mm and 1/8-, 5/32-, 3/16-, 7/32-, and 1/4-inch
  • 4 Pozidriv: PZ0, PZ1, PZ2, and PZ3
Poszidriv screws are similar to Phillips head screws, but are less prone to slippage at high torque and so provide better performance when working with air and power tools. Note that Pozidriv screwdrivers are likely to slip or tear out the screw head when used in Phillips screws.
  • 14 nut drivers
Drill Bits
This is interesting, since the kit doesn’t come with a drill. The manufacturers apparently assume that either you have a cordless drill and will appreciate a couple of good bit sets, or that if you don’t have one, you should get one. They’re right. If you don’t have a good, basic, cordless drill, you’ll appreciate it when you do. Check out Amazon's selection of cordless drills.
  • 13-piece titanium-coated high-speed steel with steel case: 1/4-, 15/64-, 7/32-, 13/64-, 3/16-, 11/64-, 5/32-, 9/64-, 1/8-, 7/64-, 3/32-, 5/64-, and 1/16-inch
  • 50-piece chrome vanadium steel 1-inch screwdriver bit set can be used with either a cordless drill or the ratcheting screwdriver included in this kit.
  • 5-piece masonry bit set with steel case: 5/32-, 3/16-, 1/4-, 5/16-, and 3/8-inch

Drill Chart - Choose the Right Drill Bit For the Right Job

I'm always amazed at how many different types of drill bits I can buy. To try and make sense of all the choices, I've put together the following chart of the top must-have bits that woodworkers and DIY builders use in their shops.

Bits Tools

Standard Twist Bits - The Cheap and Easy

Bits Tools

By far the most common and familiar bit around is the standard twist bit. Heck, you can even find these in the aisles of your local grocery store. Not that they are necessarily the cheapest version; there are plenty of expensive, high-quality twist bits you can buy for your drill. This style just happens to be the easiest to manufacture, and so we end up seeing a lot of very cheap versions of these in discount stores.

Best part about a standard twist drill bit (other than the low price) is that they can be sharpened, even with a small hand file from your shop. Even then, I think most people who buy these usually toss them after a few projects, that is, if they haven't lost them yet. Otherwise, with a little sharpening, you can make a standard twist drill bit last for years. The bad part is that the rather blunt end tends to wander around the target, and it can be troublesome to get the hole started where you want it started. Save yourself some trouble start the hole first with an awl or an ice pick.

Pilot Point Drill Bits - A Step Up in Quality

As the name sort of implies, a pilot-point bit has a small, pointed tip that keeps the drill on target when you start drilling. The only drawback is that the added complexity of the design means you probably can't sharpen these bits at home, like you can with standard twist bits. Even then, I'm still willing to pay a little extra for these bits to make things easier in my shop. You'll save money buying a set rather than individual bits, and keep in mind that if you need to drill a hole larger than 1/2 inch, you're better off buying a different kind of drill bit all together, like a wood boring drill bit.

Wood Boring Drill Bits - Size Does Matter

As soon as we start talking about drilling holes in wood larger than 1/2" we need to talk about switching to another kind of bit: wood boring drill bits. Not that you can't get twist bits larger than 1/2" - they're just not the best choice for drilling large holes. Spade bits, augers, and hole saws are a much better match for cutting holes larger than 1/2," not to mention that they are much less expensive than large twist bits.

Specialty Drill Bits - Beyond Drilling Simple Holes

There's not much you can't do with a drill and a fancy bit these days, but some of the more common jobs for a drill bit (other than drilling holes in wood) fall mostly in the category of drilling different kinds of material (like concrete and tile) and drilling, well, larger holes! My favorite specialty bit, though, is called a plug cutter. Like the name implies, this bit will cut a smooth round hole perfectly matched to a common-sized wood plug. This is a perfect way to hide glue & screw joinery in furniture projects, and in most cases, can add a little decorative flair.

How to Get Your Dressage Horse on the Bit

Do you saw left and right on your dressage horse's mouth or wiggle the bit with both hands to get him "on the bit".

Bits Tools

If you "saw" on your dressage horse's mouth by alternating squeezing and releasing with your hands, you're riding your horse from front to back. He might look like he's "on the bit" because his head is down and his nose is on the vertical, but you don't have an honest connection from back to front.

Bits Tools

The only part of your horse's body that you can affect by "sawing" is his jaw. Moving the bit in his mouth encourages him to chew. When he chews, he flexes in the jaw.

So, if all you do is saw on the bit, all you have control over is a flexed jaw. And your horse has a whole lot more body left over that you have no influence over.

That's why you might think your horse is on the bit, but you wonder why he comes off the bit when you ask him to do something like a transition.

The reality is that he was never on the bit to begin with. All you had was a flexed jaw.

To put your horse honestly on the bit, use your "connecting aids". Close both legs to add power from behind as if you're doing a lengthening. When your horse "arrives" at your outside hand, close that hand in a fist to capture, contain, and recycle the power back to the hind legs. Do this for 3 full seconds.

THEN, lastly you can vibrate or squeeze on the inside rein for two reasons:

1. To keep his neck straight. Your goal is to keep him form bending his neck to the outside in response to your closed outside hand. This means that when you ride with his soft (hollow) side on the inside, chances are you won't need any inside rein because he won't try to look to the outside when you close your outside hand.
2. To move the bit, encourage him to chew so he flexes in the jaw.

Remember, you're riding your dressage horse from front to back if you wiggle both sides of the bit. So never do with two hands what you can do with one hand (move the bit). And you have the other hand left over for the more important job of recycling power back to the hind legs.

  • Bit driver technology makes it possible to customize the tool for any job
  • At a mere five ounces, the lightest full-size multi-tool on the market
  • 25-year warranty

Leatherman 830846 Skeletool Multitool Overview

Leatherman packs the full-size Skeletool with the tools you're likely to use most often.

Introducing the Brand New Skeletool from Leatherman
Now you're ready to lighten your load and boost your survival skills -- with Leatherman's Skeletool. At a mere 5 ounces the new, full-sized multitool keeps weight and volume to a minimum without sacrificing quality and true functionality, and that's what the Skeletool is all about. Many multitools have multiple options, but they’re often heavier -- and they're loaded with more features than most people actually need on a regular basis. Conversely, pocket knives are light and streamlined, but they render themselves useless when the task calls for a more versatile tool. Enter the new Skeletool platform, offering minimal weight, compact size and endless capabilities. And with the Skeletool's integrated, removable pocket clip, you can easily clip this tool onto a belt, a pack, or a vest -- with no sheath or tote required.

Key User Features
The Skeletool CX has a large knife blade that can be accessed while the tool is closed; to open it, just place your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade and rotate it out until it's fully extended -- which will engage the safety lock. This locking mechanism is noted with a padlock symbol on the tool. To unlock the blade, press the locking mechanism towards the handle until the blade slides past the lock.

Equipped with a universal bit driver, the Skeletool offers real utility options like no other multitool. To change the tool bits, simply unfold the tool and remove the bit from the bit driver -- and pop it out. And replacing bits is just as easy. Just press a new one into position and you're good to go. There's even a spare bit located in the handle side opposite the knife blade. This tool includes the following bits: Phillips #1 and #2, screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch.

In the plier jaws you'll find a hard-wire cutter and a regular wire cutter. The regular wire cutter is great for softer grades of wire, but the hard-wire cutter is excellent for heavier jobs -- like cutting and bending fishhooks.

Multitool Capabilities:
The Skeletool keeps it simple -- and light, and compact, and easy to transport. Why waste time with pointless, heavy add-ons when all the basics are right at your fingertips? With its open hardware, skeletal design and hardy appearance, the Skeletool boasts a premium stainless steel blade, pliers, a universal bit driver, and a carabiner/bottle opener ... and that's it.

Key Tech Specs:

  • Length: 4 inches/10 cm closed
  • Weight: 5 ounces/142 grams
  • Materials: Stainless steel, 420HC
  • Included Bits: Phillips #1 and #2, Screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch

Leatherman makes a full range of complementary accessories and add-ons for this and other Leatherman products.

Optional Accessories (not included)
Spice up your Skeletool with genuine Leatherman accessories. Options include a bit kit that offers 21 double-ended bits for real versatility. From new belt sheaths to t-shirts and caps, genuine Leatherman accessories are durable, fun and show that you're a part of Leatherman World. With such a wide variety available, it's easy to find just the add-on that's right for you.

Warranty
All Leatherman products are covered by a 25-year limited warranty. If within 25 years from the purchase date of your genuine Leatherman tool you find any defect in material or workmanship, you can count on the manufacturer to make it right with fast warranty service. To obtain warranty service, return your tool to Leatherman Tool Group. Depending on the tool defect, they will decide whether to repair your tool or replace it with a product of equal or greater value. No variations, upgrades or refunds are offered.

The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality
In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.
